The transmitter Scholzplatz in Berlin district Westend is a radio - transmitter of the RBB ( Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg ) for radio and television . These include the radio in analog ( FM on Ultrakurzwelle / Band II ) and digital ( DAB + on band III ) technology and television in the digital standard DVB-T2 HD on Band IV / V .
Since the dismantling of the medium-wave transmitter system in Stallupöner Allee , it has been the only transmitter operated independently by the rbb. It was built in 1963 and, with a height of 230 meters, has been the second-tallest structure in Berlin after the television tower since the 358-meter-high lattice mast of the directional radio system in Frohnau was blown up on February 8, 2009 . The Scholzplatz transmitter was implemented as a replacement for a West Berlin television tower that was never built .
Due to the greater height of the transmitting antennas, its technical range in the area of the former GDR was much greater than was possible with the antennas on the Berlin radio tower .

Digital radio (DAB +)
Since the introduction of DAB + on August 1, 2011, the following programs have been broadcast from Scholzplatz:
Digital television (DVB-T2)
Regular operation of DVB-T2 HD began on March 29, 2017. Since then, the programs of the ARD ( rbb -Mux) have been broadcast in the DVB-T2 standard using the HEVC video coding process and in Full HD resolution. The commercial offer from freenet TV ( encoded in Irdeto ) has also been broadcast by the station Scholzplatz since November 7, 2017.
All programs shown in italics are encrypted and can only be received via the DVB-T2 HD platform freenet TV .
The DVB-T2 HD -Ausstrahlungen the transmitter Scholzplatz are simulcast (Single Frequency Network) with other transmitter sites.

Digital television (DVB-T)
The DVB-T -Ausstrahlungen from the transmitter Scholzplatz ended March 29, 2017. They ran in single-frequency operation (Single Frequency Network) with other transmitter sites. When it gradually started in 2003, this network was the first of its kind in Germany.

Others
The frequencies emitted by the Scholzplatz transmitter are partially coordinated internationally for significantly smaller transmission parameters than they were already operating in GDR times. For the VHF frequencies 88.8 MHz, 92.4 MHz and 96.3 MHz, instead of 80 kW, only an output of 10 kW has been agreed internationally. The antennas were installed at a height of over 200 meters above the ground instead of the intended 100 meters. Presumably, the values were increased immediately after the construction of the transmitter in order to be able to continue to radiate into the GDR area.
