Nick (short for Nickelodeon , [ ˌnɪkəloʊdiən ], English "cheap movie or music hall", "jukebox", own notation: nick ) is the German language channels from Nickelodeon , the children's program of ViacomCBS . The station existed from July 5, 1995 at 1:00 p.m. to May 31, 1998 at 8:00 p.m. and as a relaunch from September 12, 2005 under the name Nick and from March 31, 2010 under Nickelodeon . Since June 28, 2017, the name Nick has been broadcast again. Since August 3, 2020, the station got 3 new offshoots on the free, advertising-financed Pluto TV. Nick Pluto TV with many series from the program, but also older series. Nick jr. Pluto TV with series for younger viewers and Nick Rewind with old and new series aimed at young people. In addition to these channels, there are also series-related offshoots on Pluto TV that show a certain series 24/7 (such as Spongebob).

history

Nickelodeon 1995-1998

Old station logo (1995–1998)

When the station went on air on July 5, 1995, it was initially only receivable via the DFS-Kopernikus satellite (an endless loop with excerpts from various Nickelodeon series could be seen here during the night) and a few cable networks in North Rhine-Westphalia , later also via the Astra satellite and nationwide via cable. From 1996 onwards, Nickelodeon Germany shared the channel with the Franco-German cultural broadcaster Arte (via Astra and Kabel). When the public children's channel started, Nickelodeon changed the broadcasting slot and from now on shared an Astra transponder with the music broadcaster VH-1 Germany .

Initially, the German branch of the successful US children's channel only broadcast for 6 hours; in October 1995, however, the station began its regular program and has been on the air 14 hours a day, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. since then. In the meantime, the airtime was cut again when Nickelodeon shared a slot with ARTE. From 1997 the broadcasting time was again extended to 8 p.m.

With the start of the public children's channel , Nickelodeon lost its slot in many cable networks; thereby the range shrank. On the weekend of Pentecost in May 1998, the station was stopped at short notice. The reasons for the broadcasting deadline were low audience ratings, the success of KiKA and the low attractiveness for advertising customers due to the broadcaster's short range.

A few months after the station was discontinued, a Nickelodeon program window started on September 28, 1998 on the Swiss public television broadcaster SF Zwei . In this window program, among other things, remnants of the German Nickelodeon were shown. The Swiss program window lasted until 2003; after 5 years of broadcasting time, SF DRS ended the contract with Nickelodeon.

Nick 2005-2010

On April 7, 2005 the then managing director of MTV Central, Catherine Mühlemann, announced that Nickelodeon would start again in Germany on September 12, 2005 as Nick .

On September 12, 2005 at 6:00 am Nick was reactivated as a new transmitter; the frequencies of the music broadcaster MTV2 Pop , which was one of four channels operated by Viacom in Germany , were taken over. This had ceased operations on September 11, 2005, and a 24-hour countdown was started.

From March 2006, in addition to the international series, self-produced German shows were launched. In October 2007, the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards (then: Nick Kids Choice Awards ) took place in Germany for the first time.

On December 1, 2007, Nick Premium, an offshoot of Nick , was launched in Germany via the Premiere Star pay-TV platform .

At the beginning of 2008 Nick tried to establish a family program for the target group of 14 to 49 year olds under the brand Nick after eight at 8:15 p.m. The main evening program showed animal documentaries such as Extreme Animals and Young and Wild , cartoons such as The Ren and Stimpy Show and CatDog , as well as numerous series classics. In October 2008, a new section was broadcast under the title Nick after eight shockers , matching the Nick Schocktober campaign.

On December 15, 2008, Nick was set after eight and replaced by a program window on Comedy Central . This gave up its own frequencies after a conversion phase for cable network operators that ended on January 13, 2009. With this step, Nick was no longer available around the clock, but only from 5:45 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Nickelodeon 2010-2017

The Nickelodeon logo until June 27, 2017

On March 31, 2010, Nick was renamed Nickelodeon . The reason for this was the international realignment of the Nickelodeon transmitter family by Viacom. In the future, as with MTV, there will only be one worldwide station design that will run on all stations in 172 countries under the name "Nickelodeon". The pay-TV offshoot Nick Premium was renamed to Nicktoons , the websites and Nick Jr. only changed the design. In the course of the rebranding, the entire program (with the exception of those programs that were still produced in 4: 3 format) was converted to 16: 9.

On May 28, 2010, in cooperation with the German Children's Fund, the Nickelodeon game day took place on the occasion of World Game Day, modeled on the US Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play . On that day, the Nickelodeon program was not broadcast from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., just a request to the children to play outside. Since then there has been a game day every summer.

After a three-year break, the Nick Talent format returned in 2010 . Instead of Banaroo , Hadnet Tesfai , Volker Neumüller and Frank Ziegler were selected as the jury. The candidates were supported by the main actors Kristina Dumitru , Marc Dumitru , Féréba Koné and Alicia Endemann from Das Haus Anubis .

On September 12, 2010, Nickelodeon celebrated its 5th birthday with many specials.

From December 21, 2010, Nickelodeon was broadcasting with a slightly changed logo, it was now displayed a little larger and three-dimensional. In line with the new logo, the program displays and the advertising separators have also been slightly revised.

Since May 23, 2011, Nickelodeon Germany has been broadcasting satellite signals in full PAL resolution.

Since October 2, 2011, Nickelodeon has only broadcast in 16: 9. Programs in 4: 3 format are zoomed in to 14: 9. The same software has since been used at Comedy Central and has been in use at VIVA since March 22, 2011 .

On January 1, 2012, Nickelodeon discontinued analog broadcasting via satellite. The station can therefore only be received digitally via satellite.

From August 12, 2013, a moderated afternoon program between 4:25 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. was introduced. Laura Garde and Sascha Quade guide you through the afternoon in around two-minute clips from the Nickelodeon Alaaarm program. In the meantime, the format can no longer be found in the program.

As of September 23, 2013, a new design was used again. The Mach mal… campaign was started at the same time. In addition to idents and trailers during the regular program, Nickelodeon was looking for the best dance to the song Fzzzl Wow Zoom by the Nickelodeon band Razzzonicks, which was composed especially for the campaign . The winner won a trip to the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2014 and was featured in the European music video for the song. The music video premiered on January 16, 2014 on Nickelodeon's programming.

From October 2014 to November 2018, Nickelodeon could be seen again 24 hours a day. The daily program (5:45 am to 9:00 pm) was aimed at children aged 3 to 13 years. In contrast to its competitors Super RTL and Disney Channel , the evening program (9: 00-5: 45 pm) was aimed at teenagers and young adults, was designed for older viewers by the hour and was called Nicknight . Comedy Central has shared the broadcasting slot with VIVA since September 8, 2014 .

Since June 1st and 27th, the analog distribution of the Unitymedia cable network has been discontinued. In many federal states, Nickelodeon was only accessible digitally in the cable network.

Nick since 2017

Since June 28, 2017, the children's channel has been broadcasting again under the short form Nick in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. However, the Nickelodeon name continues as an umbrella brand.
On September 4, 2018 Viacom announced that Nick Germany will be parted with MTV Germany from November 1, 2018 . In this context, Nicknight was discontinued in Germany. On Nick Deutschland, MTV Germany now broadcasts from 8:15 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and also broadcasts its program one hour later than the 24/7 channel of MTV Germany. The aim of the change is to make the MTV brand better known in Germany. Austria and Switzerland are not affected by the changes, Nicknight continues there.

As of February 4, 2019, the Nick Jr. program window has been waived. So Nick sends consistently from 5:00 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

3 to 13 years

Nick has published a market share in the target group of 3 to 13 year olds every year since 2005. Since the start of broadcasting, KiKA and Super RTL have been consistently behind . By 2009 the company was able to more than double its market share and in 2011 it reached its previous high of 13.3%. Only the period from 6:00 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. is considered.

From three years

Nick has published his annual odds since 2006. After the competitors KiKA (1.2%) and Super RTL (1.9%), Nick ranks third among the free-to-air children's channels in Germany (as of 2013). Websites

Current websites

In addition to nick.de, nicknight.de and the site for the pay-TV station nickjr.de , the programs n- blick with nblick.de Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with turtles.nick.de and Spongebob Schwammkopf with spongebob.de have their own site on the Internet, with dashausanubis-derfilm.de there is even a page for the movie Das Haus Anubis and the path of 7 sins , which was released in German cinemas on April 19, 2012.

While the Swiss branch has its own page with nick.ch , Nick Austria's program refers to nick.de.

Since January 1, 2012, the Nick Germany and Nick Switzerland websites can also be accessed at nickelodeon.de and nickelodeon.ch .

Former websites

Nick after eight had his own domain at nicknachacht.de , which was redirected to nick.de until the beginning of 2014. In the meantime, the forwarding is no longer available.

The same applies to the Das Haus Anubis dashausanubis.de website . This was available longer after the end of the series and was then converted into a redirect on nick.de. This forwarding has since been removed.

A website was also started for iCarly , which corresponded to the website themed in the series. In the meantime the page redirects to the show page on nick.de.

At the start of Hotel 13 , a page on the series was launched, which was available in Dutch, Danish and Swedish in addition to the German page. The German page could be found at hotel-13.com/de/ . As with iCarly, the site is now redirecting to the show site on nick.de.

For a while there was also a site for Nick Premium and Nicktoons, nickpremium.de and later nicktoons.de . In the meantime, nicktoons.de forwards to nick.de, the redirection from nickpremium.de to nicktoons.de no longer exists.

In addition to nick.de, there was a paid portal until September 23, 2011, where you could watch exclusive episodes of Nickstars on TV and play games that were not available on nick.de. Clubnick.de , the name of the portal, was discontinued on October 23, 2011, after more than 3 years, because from now on they wanted to take care of Nick's free pages more. The clubnick.de website is redirecting to an article about the end of the club on nick.de today.
