Banaroo [ bænəˈɹuː ] was a four-piece German pop band . It was compiled in early 2005 by the German television broadcaster Super RTL for the documentary soap Banaroo: Das Star-Tagebuch , which was broadcast daily between April and July 2005 on the station's evening program. Similar to the Dutch casting band Ch! Pz , Banaroo was intended to appeal to younger children in particular with simple but very catchy pop songs. In their founding year, the four were among the most commercially successful German bands and received two Echo nominations.

Band history
Banaroo: The Star Diary
After the continued success of casting shows on German television, Super RTL conceived the Star Diary as a new television format. Michael Bolte, member of the marketing department at Super RTL, is considered the intellectual father of the project. Based on the concept of pop stars , the new program was intended to document a newly assembled pop band as they take their first steps in their careers and thus enable an authentic look at the initial work of a band. In contrast to other formats, however, all interactive elements for the continuous selection of the casting participants were dispensed with.
The casting took place before filming began in close coordination with the record company Na Klar! Records Hennef / Berlin. The aim was to find so-called high potentials , young artists who were still at the beginning of their careers, but who could already refer to their first experiences in the field of song and dance in front of an audience. Dessauvagie, Dreyer, Geißler and Magro emerged from the casting as participants in the series. Banaroo was chosen as the name of the band . According to Vittorio Magro, it goes back to a personal experience when visiting the zoo. When a small child asked him whether kangaroos would also eat bananas, he replied: "If kangaroos would eat bananas, they would have to be called banaroos ..."
With the broadcast of Banaroo: The Star Diary , Super RTL began on April 18, 2005. Up until July 10, 2005, a total of 84 chapters were shown daily at 7:05 pm. The series was produced by Mark Feuerstake, who also directed. The four band members moved into a shared apartment in Cologne for the shooting . In the five-minute episodes, the viewer was able to follow all activities to build Banaroo's career, such as voice training and choreography rehearsals, but also got private insights. Super RTL broadcast a 20-minute weekly summary every Saturday morning.
The show developed into Super RTL's most successful in-house production since the station was founded. Every evening, an average of 590,000 viewers (market share: 2.9%) watched the series, with up to 800,000 viewers at the top. In the target group of 3 to 13 year olds relevant for Super RTL, Das Star-Tagebuch had an average of 370,000 viewers and a market share of 30.2%.
Dubi Dam Dam
Five weeks after the first episode, the debut single Dubi Dam Dam came out on May 23, 2005 . In addition to a remix, it also contained the title song of the series: Make You See the Stars . The single was produced by Carsten Wegener and Timo Hohnholz, who were also responsible for essential parts of the album that later followed. And as with other previously cast bands, the strategy of using constantly available television presence as a marketing tool also worked with Banaroo. The song immediately reached number two in the single charts in Germany. He was equally successful in Austria and Switzerland.
The debut album Banaroo's World , released five weeks later, was also a great sales success. On June 20, 2005, it first entered the charts at number five, and in mid-August it topped the charts for a week. In Austria, the album stayed at number one for seven weeks. Shortly afterwards, the second single produced by Thorsten Brötzmann was released from the album. Space Cowboy largely confirmed the success of the first single and reached the top five in Germany.
At the end of September 2005, Banaroo in Germany was awarded a gold record for more than 150,000 singles sold and a platinum record for more than 200,000 albums sold . The single and album were also awarded gold in Switzerland and Austria.
For their success, Banaroo was nominated as Best Newcomer for both the Comet pop music award from the German music channel VIVA and for the Echo .
Banaroo - The Movie!
After the TV series ran out, the DVD Banaroo - The Film! on the market. In addition to the three music videos for Dubi Dam Dam , Space Cowboy and Make You See the Stars as well as five other live recordings, the DVD contains three episodes of the star diary that have not been broadcast . They show a visit by the band in the studio of the production company and a joint excursion to the Rhine. Outtakes of the series were put on DVD as bonus material .
Christmas World
Just five months after the debut, the follow-up album was released on November 25, 2005 under the title Christmas World , a compilation of well-known Christmas carols that were re-recorded by Banaroo. The album was again produced by Carsten Wegener and Timo Hohnholz.
The only newly composed song on the album was Coming Home for Christmas , which was released as a single in advance. Not least thanks to targeted marketing campaigns - the title was the official song of RTL -Benefizaktion ChariTree selected - reached the single in all German-speaking countries, in turn, the top tenth
Album No. 3: Amazing
Just in time before Super RTL began to build the next star diary band with Yoomiii , Banaroo released another album on March 24, 2006, the third within nine months. Musically it was largely based on the debut album. Five of the twelve songs again came from the Wegener / Hohnholz production team, Dieter Bohlen contributed one track . As an extra, the band re-recorded the title song of the animated series Kim Possible - originally by Christina Milian . The young fan base remained loyal to Banaroo. The album and the previously released single Uh Mamma entered the charts of all three German-speaking countries at the top. In Austria, the album reached gold status just four weeks after its release.
The last album: Fly Away
The fourth and final album Fly Away was released on February 27, 2007. It was promoted by Nickelodeon , as well as the singles Ba Yonga Wamba and I'll Fly Away . In the time around the release date, Banaroo was used as a jury in the Nick production Nick Talent . The winner of the show, Naomi Walz, was allowed to shoot the video clip for the single I'll Fly Away with Banaroo. At the end of 2007 a compilation of all the songs was published under the title The Best of Banaroo . After the lack of success, the band lost their recording contract and withdrew to their privacy.
In May 2008 Vito announced on the band's website that the band had split up and that the members wanted to devote themselves to individual projects.
Established in 2013
In 2013, Banaroo was re-established and the entire line-up was changed. Once again the band was with the record company Na Klar! Records under contract, Oliver Hintz from Villa-Productions was responsible for the music .
Neither the album nor any of the singles have made it into the charts since it was re-established.
On November 6, 2013, Luppino announced on their Facebook page that the band had broken up. In the justification it said that a collaboration with Na Klar! Records was no longer possible.
