Monster is a Dutch city on the North Sea in the province of South Holland . The place belongs to the municipality of Westland and is located about 10 km southwest of The Hague . According to data from 2017, Monster has a population of 13,900.
history
In the 13th century, large parts of what is now Westland, Loosduinen and The Hague were administered by Monster. It was only with the construction of The Hague that this area was divided into Haag-Ambacht and Half-Loosduinen . In 1811 Loosduinen was finally separated from Monster and temporarily became an independent municipality, which is now part of The Hague.
The origin of the name Monster is not known for sure. It probably comes from the Latin term "monastery", which means a monastery and the property belonging to it.
Monster was once a place of pilgrimage since the local parish in possession of some relics of its patron, the Holy Machutus was that the Dutch Machuut is called. People came to Monster in the hope of being cured of a disease that was believed to be epilepsy .
Until 2004, Monster was an independent municipality, which also included Ter Heijde aan Zee and Poeldijk. At that time the community of Monster had over 20,000 inhabitants and was 20.15 km². On January 1, 2004, it was merged with other parishes to form the new parish Westland.
Attractions
Monster has a few sights, the most important of which is the old church, the Grote Kerk . The church was built from around 1050–1100 and has had its current shape since around 1450. In 1901 it burned down completely and was then rebuilt in its old form.
Also worth mentioning is the "De vier Winden" windmill , which dates from 1882 in its current form. However, there are records of a windmill from the twelfth century as well as finds that point to a mill much earlier at this point.
The St. Josefs monastery was built from 1850 and should enable nuns to teach children. The monastery garden was added later. The last nuns left the place in 1994, the monastery was completely renovated and is now used for apartments as well as for the community center "De Noviteit".
North Sea
Monster is located directly on the North Sea and has a beach about 5 km long. It is visited by thousands of tourists, mostly day tourists, every year. There is also a water rescue station in Monster .
