Westland ( listen ^{? / I} ) is the name of an area and a municipality in the Netherlands , province of South Holland . The community has 108,573 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019).

places

The area between The Hague , Vlaardingen , Delft , Hoek van Holland and the North Sea has always been called Westland. When the smaller parishes of this region merged, they chose this name for the merged church. The eastern neighbor Midden-Delfland is also a merged municipality in the Westland region.

The Westland municipality includes the following villages: Honselersdijk, 's-Gravenzande , De Lier, Kwintsheul, Maasdijk, Monster , Naaldwijk, Poeldijk, Ter Heijde and Wateringen; plus some smaller towns.

Location and economy

Westland with its after the peat removal in the 18th / 19th Jh created fertile soil (a mixture of sand and. Klei ) (also "De glazen Stad" German  the Glass City ) called. It is the largest greenhouse cultivation area in the Netherlands, where the often criticized tomatoes and peppers from Holland, but also many flowers and ornamental plants are grown.

There are also many workshops that make greenhouses in the community.

The products from the greenhouses are auctioned on site: flowers in Honselersdijk, vegetables and fruit in Poeldijk and De Lier. Everything runs through the FloraHolland organization, which is based in Bleiswijk and Venlo, among others .

The coastal strip knows a modest beach tourism.

history

Before Ter Heijde, on August 10, 1653, a fierce sea battle took place between the war fleets from England and Holland . The Dutch, under the command of Michiel de Ruyter , were able to escape a precarious situation, but another naval hero, Maarten H. Tromp , lost his life (August 10, 1653). In 2003 the tromp festival took place there to commemorate his death.

The municipality of Westland was only founded on January 1, 2004 through the merger of five previously independent municipalities.

Attractions

The Paleis Honselaarsdijk 1683

Friedrich Heinrich von Oranien had a hunting lodge built in Honselersdijk around 1630, which was demolished after 1814. The Nederhof , one of the former side yards for servants, is still standing. Today there is a large flower auction building (Holland Flora) and the Westlands Museum, which provides an overview of the history of horticulture.

De Lier has a church from the 15th-19th centuries. Century with a leaning tower and a fruit and vegetable auction.
Monster, Poeldijk and 't Woudt (towards Delft) also each have a church from the 15th or 16th century.
The coast from Hoek van Holland to Scheveningen was strengthened in 2011 in the course of coastal protection by widening the dunes and the beach considerably by spraying sand from the sea using suction pumps. A sand peninsula in front of Ter Heijden has created a so-called sand motor, the purpose of which is to prevent the beach sand from being carried away by the sea through natural currents. However, this is still at the trial stage, as there should be no experience in this area.

The center of Naaldwijk is rich in buildings from the 17th century.
