Perez Prado

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dámaso Pérez Prado (born December 11, 1916 in Matanzas , Cuba , † September 14, 1989 in Mexico City ) was a Cuban musician ( piano , organ ) and composer who was known as the "King of Mambo ".

Life

Pérez Prado's mother was a teacher. He learned to play classical music on the piano in early childhood . He later played the organ and piano in local clubs. In the 1940s he worked mainly in Havana and belonged to the Orquesta Casino de la Playa ; In 1946 he founded his own band. In 1948 he moved to Mexico , where he spent most of his career. He specialized in mambo, and with his characteristic riffs of a five-part trumpet setting and strong counterpoints from the four-part saxophone setting , he made a significant contribution to popularizing the mambo. From 1954 Prado worked in the USA. He died at the age of 72 in his adopted home Mexico City.

Prado became known as the "King of Mambo" and composed well-known pieces such as " Mambo # 5 " and "Mambo # 8". During the heyday of the mambo, he was number one in the US charts for ten weeks with the piece “ Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White ” composed by the French Louiguy . He also took first places in the charts of Germany , Great Britain and Australia . Prado first played this title in 1951 for the film "Underwater", in which Jane Russell dances to "Cherry Pink". In 1958 Pérez Prado landed with his own composition "Patricia" back on the first place in the German and US charts; in Great Britain the record took eighth place. This piece is played in the strip scene in Federico Fellini's film “ La Dolce Vita ”. Pérez Prado brought jazz musicians like Bud Shank , Bob Cooper , Maynard Ferguson and Shorty Rogers into his big band . He has also appeared in feature films in Mexico, the United States, and Europe. The Pérez Prado orchestra is continued today by his son.

In 1999 Lou Bega released an internationally successful cover version of “ Mambo # 5 ”.
