The village of Voorschoten is located immediately south of Leiden and lies between the railway line The Hague - Leiden in the west and the Rhine-Schie Canal in the east. Wassenaar is to the west and Leidschendam to the south . To the east of the municipality lies the Vliet , a local recreation area created from a quarry pond; behind it runs the highway Den Haag - Amsterdam. Voorschoten has two small train stations: one on the western outskirts and one (De Vink) on the north-western border with Leiden.

history

Already around 2000 BC There was a settlement in the area of today's municipality Voorschoten in the area of Boschgeest. Fishermen and hunters lived there. The Roman name was forescate.

The elongated form of the settlement originated in the Middle Ages. Count Floris V of Holland granted the place market rights in 1282.

From 1858 to 1985 Voorschoten was the seat of a very large, silver- processing workshop, which can be classified as a factory. In the first decade after the Second World War, Voorschoten grew considerably from almost 5500 inhabitants in 1934 to around 9300 inhabitants in early 1946 to now almost 25,000 inhabitants.

Also in this century Voorschoten will have more and more inhabitants. That is why the new settlements Starrenburg, Krimwijk and Starrenburg II are being built.
