Hillegom ( listen ^{? / I} ) is a municipality in the Netherlands , province of South Holland . Hillegom has 21,953 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019). The total area of ​​the municipality is 13.47 km².

Location and economy

Hillegom is located in the dune area between Haarlem (8 km to the north) and Lisse . It has a small train station on the Haarlem - The Hague railway line . The A4 Leiden - Schiphol motorway can be reached via the N207 (only a few kilometers). Hillegom is located in the far north of the province of South Holland.

As in Lisse , the Hillegom economy is characterized by the cultivation of flower bulbs . The Bakker company comes from here . Other small businesses are also attracted by the local subsidy policy . Tourism is a little less important than in Lisse.

history

The Germanic Caninefats lived in the area about 2000 years ago . In the Middle Ages , a court was built here, possibly a residence of the Counts of Holland . In any case, the count's councilors held important meetings here in 1346 and 1347. The village was badly hit during the Eighty Years' War (devastation in 1575 and 1577). Around 1700 people began to dig away the dunes so that cultivation areas for tulips would become free. The rights of an official of Hillegom were acquired in 1722 by the well-known Amsterdam merchant Jan Six , a son of the well-known art collector of the same name. This strongly promoted the cultivation of the flower bulbs. Six also bought the old country estate "Het Hof", where the Counts of Holland are said to have lived. In the 18th century there were many such country estates and mansions in the then still wooded area. In the 19th century, however, these all had to give way to the economically profitable flower fields to this day.

Since December 2, 2014, Arie van Erk has been the acting mayor of the municipality. His colleagues include the alderman Anne de Jong ( population matters Hillegom ), Fred van Trigt ( CDA ), Jan van Rijn ( population matters Hillegom), Karin Hoekstra (CDA) and the community secretary Constance Baauw .
