The Holding P. Bakker Hillegom BV (usually called Bakker for short ) with its headquarters in Lisse , the flower bulb center ("Bollenstreek") of the Netherlands , is the largest plant shipping company in Europe. It has branches there in almost all countries. There are only competitors in the market in Germany, France and Great Britain. Bakker only sells directly to end customers via catalogs that appear twice a year in a new edition and with a circulation of millions and the multilingual website.
The company was founded in 1945 by Piet Bakker from Hillegom (near Amsterdam ) as a mail order company for flower bulbs. Plant dispatch Ammersbek GmbH has been a German subsidiary since the early 1970s . The subsidiary owned a 37,000 m² garden center in Ahrensburg , which was sold in 2003 by the founder's son, Jacques Bakker, in a management buy-out in a management buy-out as part of the focus on core competencies . From September 2002 to mid-2006, a non-family member, Wil Amian, was CEO of the holding for the first time .
In Bakker's central distribution center in Lisse (supplied by a total of two prepackaging centers) around 400,000 items are made ready for dispatch every day at 66 picking stations. An expansion by a further 12 picking stations is planned.
The holding company has annual sales of around 135 million euros (2006). Orders are received from around three million customers every year. The company employs around 700 people.
Bakker Hillegom is the official partner of the Keukenhof Garden, one of the largest Dutch tourist attractions.
The companies Bakker.com BV, Bakker.com Business BV and Holdingmij. Bakker voor de tuin BV were declared insolvent on February 7, 2018, which includes practically all Dutch trading activities of the Bakker.com group.
