history

Keukenhof Castle

In the 15th century the area in which the Keukenhof is located was still untouched nature and the property of Jakobäa von Bayern . She used the estate to grow herbs for the castle kitchen. Hence the name Keukenhof (kitchen garden). In 1857 the landscape architect Jan David Zocher senior created the garden plan for the Keukenhof Palace (built in 1642) together with his son Louis Paul . The English landscape garden that he created back then still forms the basis of the park today. At the suggestion of a group of bulb growers, the Keukenhof was set up as a spring flower show in 1949 to give them the opportunity to present their plants. From 1959 the park was also open to the public. In 2004 the garden designer Jacqueline van der Kloet began using so-called confetti plantings in order to break through the previously used symmetrical planting patterns.

In 2020 Keukenhof will remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic by order of the Dutch government.

description

Around 100 purveyors to the court are responsible for ensuring that every year onion flowers - such as daffodils , hyacinths , imperial crowns - can be seen in the Keukenhof, which thrive in the sandy and chalky soil. The main theme is traditionally tulips, of which 4,500,000 bulbs are planted by hand in 100 variations every year. In total, around seven million flower bulbs are planted in the 30 flower shows. The 32  hectare park with 2,500 trees in 87 variations is criss-crossed by 15 kilometers of walking paths and has seven inspirational gardens with garden ideas for visitors. In addition, the Keukenhof is also a large sculpture park with 150 works by 50 artists .

The main flowering time depends on the respective weather conditions . It is usually in the middle of April. According to the Keukenhof, around 1.4 million people visit the Keukenhof during the eight weeks it is open each year, around 80% of whom come from abroad.

Bulbs and potted plants are presented in the Keukenhof pavilions. A colorful spectacle that changes every week is shown in the Oranje Nassau Pavilion. Orchids and anthuriums will be exhibited in the Beatrix Pavilion for eight weeks. Tulips are shown in the Willem-Alexander Pavilion and a large lily exhibition has been taking place there over the past twelve days.

Activities for children include scavenger hunts, a petting zoo, a maze and a playground.
