Location and economy

Lisse is halfway between Leiden and Haarlem (distance each about 12 km). The nearest train station is in Sassenheim, 4 km away, on the Schiphol - Leiden - The Hague line . The village lies behind the dunes , east of Noordwijkerhout and less than 10 km east of the North Sea .

Lisse is a village of bulb growers . The sandy, chalky soil, so-called "geestgrond", is very suitable for this. Lisse is the headquarters of the Bakker plant shipping company . The research and training center PPO is located in Lisse. It is mainly concerned with the properties and breeding of plants that grow from flower bulbs. It is now a branch of Wageningen University . To the west of the village is the former country estate "Keukenhof" (see below), a tourist destination that is known worldwide.

history

The area around Lisse was already inhabited 2000 years ago by the Germanic tribe of the Caninefats or Cananefats. It is possible that people have lived here even earlier, as an ax was found during archaeological excavations , which bearers of the Vlaardingen culture probably used. The village of Lisse was first mentioned in a document in 1198 . Between 1401 and 1436 , the Countess of Holland, Jacoba von Baiern , had the kitchen herb garden (Keukenhof) of Teylingen Castle laid out here. Up until the late 17th century it was a poor village, administered by the landlord of Noordwijkerhout . But then the cultivation of tulips came up, which turned out to be very productive in the Lisser Boden. In 1623 a small lake was drained (Poelpolder, now a new district in Liss). The country estates in the wooded area were all demolished between 1700 and 1900, or cleared in order to be able to plant bulb fields. Around 1900 the Reichsfachschule for flower bulb cultivation was established. The Keukenhof was in 1949 for the first time openly asked the tourists.

Attractions

The Keukenhof in the northern municipal area is known worldwide , a delightful, large park in which the most beautiful tulips and other onion blossoms are shown every spring . It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Netherlands.

The following are also noteworthy:

  • the many tulip fields
  • the flower parade , every year in the second half of April
  • the ruins of Dever Castle, south of the village (a tower from 1370 )
