Teylingen is a Dutch municipality in the province of South Holland . It was created on January 1, 2006 from the merger of the municipalities of Sassenheim, Voorhout and Warmond. Teylingen is located north of Leiden in the growing area for flower bulbs.
The name of the community is derived from Teylingen Castle , a ruin in the hamlet of Teylingen.
Part of the municipal area consists of lakes that were created by the former peat extraction : the Kagerplassen , which also border the municipalities of Alkemade and Haarlemmermeer .
Sassenheim
Sassenheim is an important industrial location. Among other things, there is an Akzo Nobel factory here . Bulb cultivation has almost completely disappeared. The name Sassenheim is derived from the word Saxony and the Franconian local ending home .
Voorhout
Jakobäa lived and died in 1436 in Voorhouter Schloss Teijlingen. The physician Herman Boerhaave (1668–1738) and the football players Edwin van der Sar and Rob van Dijk come from Voorhout .
Warmond
To the north of the village is a castle ( Huis te Warmond ), which in its current form dates from the 18th century. The tower remains of the old village church and is a ruin that is used as a cemetery. The church was destroyed in 1573 by residents from Leiden because it offered protection to the Spanish. Warmond was the place of death of the deaf teacher Johann Konrad Ammann , and for a time the residence of the painter Jan Steen ; today it is the residence of the writer Maarten 't Hart .
