The Rijksweg 44 (abbreviation: RW 44 ) - short form: Autosnelweg 44 (abbreviation: A44 ) / Autoweg 44 (abbreviation: N44 ) - is a Dutch motorway that is known as Autosnelweg A44 from Burgerveen (junction Burgerveen with the A4 ) in the south of Amsterdam runs to The Hague . Shortly after Leiden, the Rijksweg continues as a motor road to the center of The Hague.
In 1959, construction began on the section from Burgerveen, past Leiden to The Hague. The motorway running west of the A4 was opened to traffic in 1961 under the name A4a. In 1976 the A4a motorway was renamed the A44.
In 2004 the N44 was extended to the center of The Hague. Rijksweg 44 is only 28 km long and serves as a relief route for the A4. The largest towns along the Rijksweg are Leiden and The Hague .
In contrast to the A4, which is very prone to congestion, the A44 is a motorway with comparatively little traffic. Due to its old age, many sections of this motorway are in great need of renovation. However, there are currently no plans for this.
Top speeds
A maximum speed of 120 km / h applies from the Burgerveen motorway junction to shortly before Wassenaar . Shortly before Wassenaar, the speed limit is first reduced to 100 km / h and then later to 70 km / h. At the entrance to Wassenaar, the maximum speed is only 50 km / h. For this purpose, two separate speed cameras are installed at the entrance to Wassenaar.
