The Rijksweg 4 is a Dutch Rijksweg that of Amsterdam according Woensdrecht runs. From there it continues as the Belgian A12 past Antwerp to Brussels . The currently 124 km long motorway was planned from 1950 to create a direct connection between Amsterdam and Brussels. In addition, the A4 forms the direct connection to Schiphol Airport . Between the Knooppunt Benelux near Rotterdam and Klaaswaal there is still a gap of approx. 11 km.
Current course
Knooppunt Burgerveen - Leiden
In September 2007 the 14 km long section between the Knooppunt Burgerveen and Leiden was completely extended. The northern section was completed as planned in 2010. The southern section could not be completed, however, as the work had to be interrupted again and again due to incorrect particulate matter measurements and other environmental reasons. According to the latest plans, the southern part should be completed in 2014 [obsolete] .
Delft - Schiedam
The 7 km long stretch between the Delft- Zuid exit and the Knooppunt Kethelplein could not be built as planned in 2006 because the planning was repeatedly disrupted by nature conservationists. To this end, the neighboring municipality of Midden-Delfland repeatedly objected to the plans of the Rijkswaterstaat because they saw their nature reserve endangered.
The latest plans envisage that almost the entire A4 in the area between Delft and Schiedam will be tunnelled to protect the nature reserve. Construction began on April 26, 2012, and approval was granted on December 18, 2015.
Interruption between Hoogvliet and Klaaswaal
The section between the Knooppunt Benelux and the Numansdorp exit is the only missing piece of the A4. According to the current plans, the motorway should run past Hoogvliet , Poortugaal and Oud-Beijerland . It should cross the rivers Oude Maas and Spui .
The Rijkswaterstaat intends that the 11 km long section will be built by a private construction company from 2020 and then operated as a toll road.
Dinteloord - Halsteren
The four-lane motorway was opened to traffic on November 24, 2014. The construction time lasted about 3 years from 2011 to 2014 and was carried out by the Rijkswaterstaat . The diversion of the A4 at this point via the N259 is no longer necessary.
Halsteren - Woensdrecht
The section between Halsteren and Woensdrecht is the last section of the A4. The motorway between Halsteren and Bergen op Zoom was only rebuilt in 2007. Between the Knooppunt Zoomland and the Knooppunt Markiezaat, the route is numbered twice, as it forms a common street with the A58 .
