Sloten was a former village in the Dutch province of North Holland and is now part of the municipality of Amsterdam .

history

The oldest official mention of Sloten comes from the year 1063 and is around 200 years older than Amsterdam. Around the year 1000 the area was a boggy landscape and barely populated. After the year 1000 agriculture started and the first villages were founded. Around 1175 Sloten was relocated to today's Sloterweg.
The Sloterweg was the most important land connection between Amsterdam and North Holland until the beginning of the 16th century .

The smallest police station in the Netherlands

In 1816 the village of Sloten became an independent municipality. Since January 1921, Sloten has belonged to the municipality of Amsterdam and was partially integrated into the Osdorp district . In the middle of Sloten is the smallest police station in the Netherlands. In the 1990s, several new housing estates emerged, on the Tuinbouw area Sloten the settlement "Nieuw Sloten". On the other side of the district “ De Aker ” and “Oostoever”. Around 1979 the garden cities ("Tuinsteden") Tuinstadt Slotermeer, Geuzenveld, Slotervaart , Overtoomse Veld and Osdorp were completed.
Sloten has 13,490 inhabitants (as of February 2010). Sloten's oldest windmill , built in 1636, was in operation until 1932. When the Nieuwe Meer (“New Lake”) was expanded in the 1950s , the “Riekerplas” was created. In 1956 the mill was demolished and in 1961 it was rebuilt on the Amstel near Kalfjeslaan.
