history
Around 1650 the Oostelijke Eilanden Kattenburg, Oostenburg and Wittenburg were created. The artificially created islands were a port area together with Uilenburg, Valkenburg and Rapenburg . The Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) and the Admiralty Amsterdam built their ships here. Tsar Peter I also worked here . The Amsterdam canal belt was expanded to include the Oostelijke Eilanden and the Westelijke Eilanden , creating a ring-like structure for the Amsterdam city center . The individual new islands were each assigned a special task: Kattenburg was to serve the Admiralty, Oostenburg the VOC and Wittenburg private shipyards. The latter was named after the owner of the first shipyard on this island: Jan Witheijn. On the east side, behind the ramparts, are the Reeperbahnen of the shipyards, which are still in existence today .
The districts of Kattenburg, Wittenburg and Oostenburg belong to the Oostelijke Eilanden . In 1953, after Kattenburg had become a slum over time ( Krottenwijk , von Krot derogatory for Loch), a rebuilding of the quarter began. After 1800 Oostenburg became an area for the steel industry.
The historic Oosterkerk church is located in Wittenburg . In Oostenburg the Oost Indisch Pakhuis (East Indian warehouse) of the former VOC and in Kattenburg the Het Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum).
In 1884 the islands got a horse-drawn tram (Paarde- (Tram) lijn). 1906 the first electric streetcar (tram) with the number 13. This was replaced by the bus route 19 in 1938. In Kattenburg the number 18 tram ran between 1913 and 1931. Since 2005 the number 26 tram has been going to Kattenburg.
