history

The covered courtyard, Open Pleyn , of the Scheepvaartmuseum, which has been covered since 2011

In 1650, three artificial islands ("eilanden") were created in Amsterdam for shipyards, apartments and warehouses. On the island Kattenburg that arose Zeemagazijn the Admiralty Amsterdam , which opened the 1656th It served as a storage facility for cannons, ship equipment and much more. In 1791 the building was ravaged by fire and in 1795, after reconstruction, the Zeemagazijn became the warehouse of the Dutch Navy , which it officially remained until the early 1970s.

The museum was created on a private initiative for a Dutch maritime museum. That is why collectors, interested parties and sponsors founded the Vereeniging Nederlandsch Historisch Scheepvaart Museum (NHSMA) in 1916 as the future sponsor for the planned museum in order to bundle the activities. In 1921 a building in the Cornlis Schuytstraat behind what is now the “Museum Quarter” was acquired. The Queen, also patron of the Vereeniging , opened the Neederlands Scheepvaartmuseum in 1922 . Since the 1950s there has been an intensive search for a larger area for the significantly increased collection. But it was not until 1969 that the financing and planning for a move, renovation and restoration to the Zeemagazijn were secured. On April 13, 1973 the Scheepvaartmuseum was officially opened. Due to urgent renovation work, the museum was closed for four years from 2007. The Dutch architect Liesbeth van der Pol designed a “ master plan ” for the “new museum” with a reception hall, library, restaurant and larger exhibition rooms. The costs for this amounted to 58 million euros . The highlight of the renovated museum is the courtyard covered with thousands of glass fragments , known as the Open Pleyn .

In the 1970s, around 40,000 visitors were expected, shortly before the closure in 2007 there were already 200,000, with 300,000 visitors expected in the future. In the first year after the renovation there were 476,397 visitors.

On May 14, 2012 the museum won the Amsterdamse Architectuur Prijs ("Amsterdam Architecture Prize", AAP), the Gouden AAP ("Golden AAP)."
