Magazine (military supply warehouse)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the early modern era, magazines were used to supply the armies with food and forage ( fouragemagazin ).

The system of supplying the troops through magazines developed parallel to the emergence of the standing armies . Its purpose was to reduce looting and desertion as a result of supply shortages. In addition, mismanagement and the spoilage of food through the distribution of food according to certain norms (rations) depending on the troop strength should be prevented. Magazines as well as depots were usually housed in fortresses , which made them centers of warfare.
