history

Around 1200 there was first settlement in Amsterdam on the western bank of the Amstel (along today's Nieuwendijk street ) in the form of a few farms. Between 1200 and 1275, the actual settlement of Amsterdam with its own church ( Oude Kerk ) was built around today's Warmoesstraat (formerly Kerkstraat ), corresponding to today's district. On October 27, 1275, Count Florens V of Holland ( Dutch : Floris V ) granted a customs privilege to Amsterdam, which at the time was still called “Amstelledamme”. This day is considered the official founding date of the city of Amsterdam. Around 1380 the Grimburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal canals were created. The numerous monasteries owned most of the land on Ouden Zijde. After the alteration of 1578, the monasteries were expropriated by the municipality and the land gradually changed to other uses.

The Burgwallen Oude Zijde are located east of the Damrak , near the Dam , and are bordered by the Rokin , the Amstel River , the Geldersekade , the Nieuwmarkt , the Prins Hendrikkade and the Kloveniersburgwal . The Warmoesstraat and the street Nes were originally dikes to protect the Oude Zijde against flooding of the Amstel. The Zeedijk (literally: sea dike) later had this function. The area between today's Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat is known as the red light district De Wallen . The Erotic Museum is located on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal . The oldest church in Amsterdam, the Oude Kerk , is in the area, as is the former De Waag city scales on the Nieuwmarkt. Here is also the Amsterdam Chinatown and the former Jodenbuurt (= Jewish quarter).
