The Plantagebuurt ( German  plantation district ), also called Plantage or Plantage Amsterdam , is a district in the city center of Amsterdam and has 1,980 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

history

The Plantagebuurt borders on the Nieuwe Herengracht ( Neue Herengracht ), the Plantage Muidergracht, Singelgracht and the Entrepotdok.

Around 1662/1663, when Amsterdam was expanded for the fourth time ( vierde enlarging van de stad ), it was decided to build on the area east of the Amstel . The northern part, today's plantation, was divided into parcels by the community council (gemeentebestuur) , which were rented out as a garden. In the 18th century, the Amsterdam plantation was a pleasure garden for the urban residents. After 1860 the area became a residential area.

At the end of the 19th century, several theaters were built in the Plantagenbuurt. The Panoramagebouw (1880–1935) and the Zomertheater (from 1879). Between 1892 and 1911 the Parkschouwburg and the Artis Schouwburg (later the Hollandsche Schouwburg ). In 2012 there are several museums in the district: the Zoölogisch Museum (in: Artis ), the Geological Museum , the Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam and the Vakbondmuseum (trade union museum ).

Verzetsmuseum

The Amsterdamsche Omnibus Maatschappij was founded in the 19th century . In 1875 the first horse-drawn tram ( paardentramlijn ) went from the plantation to the Leidseplein . The horse tram was replaced by the electric tram in 1903.

The bridge with the no. 259 over the canal to the Kerklaan plantation was named after the resistance fighter Laura Carola Mazirel (1907–1974).

In 2011, 16 cultural institutes in the eastern inner city of Amsterdam, including the Plantagebuurt, had more than four million visitors. In 2006 there were 3,400,000. The museums and theaters have been working together under the name Plantage Amsterdam for more than 10 years .
