Location of the Indian Buurt neighborhood in Amsterdam |
The Indische Buurt ( German Indian Quarter ) is a neighborhood in the district of Amsterdam-Oost ( province of North Holland ) and had 22,925 inhabitants in 2017.
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Indian Buurt was laid out as a workers' quarter for dock workers and is now part of the Oost district . It is a multicultural neighborhood with a high proportion of immigrants . Among its residents, 65% have a migration background (Dutch allochtoone ) from around 150 countries. The largest groups of immigrants come from Turkey , Morocco and Suriname .
The quarter is divided into West Indische buurt and Oost Indische buurt . After the eastern port area was relocated to the west of the city in the 1960s, there was no future for the port workers and the original working-class district became a residential area. In the 1970s, older houses were demolished and new apartments were built, including in the style of the Amsterdam school .
Flevopark, which was laid out in 1928, is located on the eastern side of the district . Here is the Schellingwouderbrug bridge on the northern side , which connects the district with Amsterdam Noord . On September 2, 2007, was court Timorplein officially opened with a cinema, a theater and a convention and conference center.
