The island Java ( Dutch Java-eiland ) is an artificial island and a district in the eastern port area of Amsterdam . It is located in a bay of the IJ , a Dutch lake .

On January 1, 2017, the island had 3,215 inhabitants on a land area of ​​17 hectares .

Java is connected in the south to the eastern port area of ​​Amsterdam via the Jan Schaefer Bridge . The street names on the island refer to the Indonesian island of the same name .

history

The construction of a mooring began in the 19th century. Originally the island served as a breakwater for the eastern port area, as well as the adjacent KNSM island . It was later expanded to include the IJkade and increased with dredged material from the North Sea Canal . The Dutch Steamship Company (Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland), which served lines to the Dutch East Indies , docked at the port area that was created in this way . After the Second World War , as a result of the decolonization of Indonesia in the 1950s, there was no longer any trade in the east. Squatters , artists and urban nomads took possession of them in the 1980s .

In the 1990s, the area was redeveloped for residential use. Most of the buildings were demolished. The island is traversed by four canals built in 1995, with postmodern canal houses by various architects as well as cycle and footpath bridges.
