Rapenburg is a peninsula ( Dutch Schiereiland ) and a residential area in the Amsterdam-Centrum district in the Dutch province of North Holland . The history of Rapenburg begins around 1593 as a shipyard. The origin of the name of the peninsula is still unknown today. On January 1, 2017, Rapenburg had 1,030 inhabitants.

history

Together with the artificial peninsulas Uilenburg and Valkenburg , Rapenburg lies on the Amsterdam IJ and was laid out during the "Second Extension of Amsterdam" ( Tweede enlarging van Amsterdam , between 1578 and 1665). The city expansion was planned for the creation of shipyards, storage areas for wood for shipbuilding and as a further line of defense for the city of Amsterdam .

Amsterdam 1593

One of the oldest known illustrations by Pieter Bast from 1597 shows Rapenburg from a bird's eye view. The engraving is exhibited in Amsterdam's “ Het Scheepvaartmuseum ”. The Dutch East India Company ( Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie , VOC) initially had its shipyards in Rapenburg, and timber merchants had also settled there as suppliers for the VOC. In 1597 the former ship carpenter Jan Michelsz, who had a business in Lastage , bought a piece of land on the peninsula. At that time there were only a few residents on Rapenburg, which did not change until 1608. Building land was sold there that year. Influential merchants, members of the Vroedschap as well as carpenters and bricklayers acquired parcels . The buyers were obliged to provide part of the property for public roads and to bear the costs of the road construction themselves. Many of the parcels were owned by the city and taken into use by the Admiralty of Amsterdam during the Republic of the Seven United Provinces . The VOC shipyards and wood storage facilities were relocated to Wittenburg and the Oostelijke Eilanden in the second half of the 17th century .

Around 1670, most of the shipyards were relocated to other areas and the land on what is now Prins Hendrikkade was sold for housing. In 2012 there are still some monumental VOC apartments and warehouses on Rapenburg. Rapenburg was part of Amsterdam's Jodenbuurt (Jewish quarter) , including a synagogue and a diamond cutting shop.
