Oud-West ( German  Alt-West ) is a district of the municipality of Amsterdam in the Amsterdam-West district and belongs to the Dutch province of North Holland . The area of the district was (July 2009) 1.75 km²; in 2003 Oud-West had a population of 31,905 people, and in 2007 it was inhabited by 177 nationalities.

meaning

In the broadest sense, Oud-West was the name for all older neighborhoods in Amsterdam-West before the Second World War , including the districts of De Baarsjes , Westerpark and the district of Bos en Lommer .

history

The history of Oud-West begins with the creation of a pedestrian path from Amsterdam to Sloten , which later became Heiligeweg and Overtoom . Around 1661, the Kwakerspoel canal (ndl. Gracht ) was created in this part of the city , where the Bellamyplein is today . It was a rural area with windmill-powered sawmills. The Kwakerspoel was drained around 1890 . When the last windmill was dismantled, the former canal was drained and converted into a street, the Kwakerstraat . After 1636 the first municipal buildings, hostels and printing works were built in this area and in 1784 the De Liefde church . More commercial architecture and residential buildings were added, and a mixed Amsterdam neighborhood was created. A large hall complex, the Remise Tollenstraat , was built for the first electric tram . which served as the terminus and repair building for the Amsterdam trams and buses until 1996 . De Hallen have been a listed building since April 2002 and are to be converted into a theater, a sports school, a cinema and a library. Construction work on this began in 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2015. The district chairman Bouwe Olij opened the new district museum Bellamy Buurtmuseum in December 2008 , where exhibitions about the history of Oud-West take place. In April 2009, 230 buildings were listed in the Oud-West district.
