Nicolaas Beets (born September 13, 1814 in Haarlem , † March 13, 1903 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian, church historian, poet and writer.

Life

Beets was the son of the pharmacist and chemist Martinus Nicolaas Beets (born April 19, 1780 in Haarlem; † August 5, 1869 there) and his wife Marie Elisabeth de Waal Malefijt (* July 2, 1787 in Haarlem; † April 8, 1855 there ). After finishing school in his hometown, he began to study theology at the University of Leiden in 1833 and was able to successfully complete this study on March 11, 1839 with the thesis Aeneae Sylvii, qui postea Pius Papa Secundus, morum mentisque mutationis rationibus with his doctorate . In 1840 he became pastor in Heemstede and in 1854 got a permanent position as a preacher at the Utrecht Cathedral . During these years Beets began to write poems and novels, most of which were published under his pseudonym Hildebrand .

On December 14, 1874, the University of Utrecht appointed him full professor of church history and Christian ethics, which he took on on March 16, 1875 with the speech Karakter, karakterschaarscht, karaktervorming . In 1877/78 he officiated as rector of the university , which task he resigned with the speech Groote mannen en ware grootheid and was retired from his professorship on September 16, 1884. He received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Utrecht in 1865, was a corresponding member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in 1848 and a full member in 1859 , and an honorary member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden. He was also Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , Knight of the Order of the Leopold of Belgium , Officer of the Order of the Oak Crown and Knight of the Golden Lion of Nassau .

Contemporary literary criticism praised Beets and compared his early work with that of George Gordon Byron . But also the movement of Sturm und Drang found a worthy representative in Beets. In his novellas, Beets thematized the landscapes of his homeland with their inhabitants just as precisely as he wrote his non-fiction books. This includes theological works, such as his work on Paulus von Tarsus , works of literary criticism , such as Verscheidenheden meest op letterkundig gebied and again and again literary works.
