The University of Utrecht ( Dutch : Universiteit Utrecht - UU , formerly Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht - RUU ) is the second largest university in the Netherlands and is based in Utrecht . In 2016 it had around 30,000 students and 6,700 employees.
history
The University of Utrecht was founded on March 26, 1636 and is the fourth oldest university in the country after the University of Leiden , the (now defunct) University of Franeker and the University of Groningen . The Utrecht City Library, founded in 1584, became the Utrecht University Library when the university was founded , the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. The university is a member of the League of European Research Universities LERU and the Utrecht Network .
