The University of Maastricht ( Dutch Universiteit Maastricht , English Maastricht University ) was founded in 1976 as Rijksuniversiteit Limburg in Maastricht and is one of the youngest universities in the Netherlands . It is known for its internationally oriented courses, the high proportion of foreign students and problem-oriented learning . The university is a member of the cross-border university association ALMA. On January 11, 2008, the University of Maastricht was renamed Maastricht University to emphasize its international character. Since 2007 the School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University has had the so-called " Triple Crown " (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA). Only 55 universities worldwide are currently awarded this triple seal of approval.

organization

It is a state university in the Netherlands. As at all Dutch universities, since the academic year 2002/2003 the course has been based on the standardized European study system with the degrees of Bachelor and Master . The tuition fees vary depending on the type of enrollment, but for full-time students from the EU they are currently around 1951 euros per year. All lectures are held in either Dutch or English , depending on the course.

students

More than 47 percent of the students, especially those studying European and business studies, come from abroad. Maastricht University employs over 3,200 people, 1,800 of whom are academic staff (2013).

Problem-based learning

The university is known for its "problem-based learning" study system, in which current problems are dealt with in small groups of a maximum of 15 students. Participation in the so-called "tutorials" is mandatory for every student. With this system you always have direct contact with a tutor. Classical lectures are only offered as support.

tuition fee

At the start of the new academic year 2017/2018, the tuition fee for EU students is EUR 2,060 and that for non-EU students is usually EUR 8,500. Alternatively, students who work in the Netherlands or whose parents work in the Netherlands or who can prove that they have resided in the Netherlands for at least five consecutive years can, like Dutch students, apply for a loan from the state. Students who work more than 56 hours a month are also entitled to this financial support from the Dutch government. Alternatively, you can also qualify for BAföG abroad.

The School of Business and Economics (SBE) at Maastricht University primarily offers internationally oriented courses in English. Due to a proportion of foreigners of up to 60% in some courses, 30% foreign lecturers and a compulsory semester abroad, the University of Maastricht offers a high degree of internationality. The Problem Based Learning (PBL) system and especially the tightly aligned study plan make motivation and determination to be a basic requirement for success. Furthermore, the PBL system promotes interaction and rhetorical skills in subject-specific discussion groups. Intensive teamwork and frequent presentations by the students intensify the practical relevance of the course. The SBE is one of the few faculties in the world that has been awarded the AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) and British AMBA accreditation. As is customary in the Netherlands, students at SBE are accompanied during their studies by student organizations that organize workshops, parties and academic activities. SCOPE Maastricht is aware of this at SBE.

Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences

Medicine and health sciences were the university's first faculty focuses. The health science area in Maastricht in particular is one of the most important in Europe. In January 2007 the faculties of health sciences and medicine were merged. The resulting Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences offers four Bachelor programs and 15 Master’s programs. The new bachelor's degree in European Public Health ( European Health Sciences ) is taught in English and the proportion of international students is 75%. The Dutch-language course in health sciences has a very broad focus in the first year; From the second year onwards, students choose a major and a minor. There are seven specializations available. In addition to the classic study of human medicine, the faculty also offers a bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences with a special research focus. The Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences also handles the problem-oriented learning (PBL) described above, like all faculties at Maastricht University. The faculty has five main research areas: cardiovascular medicine, chronic metabolic diseases and their causes, tumor medicine with a focus on developmental medicine, neurosciences with a psychiatric focus, and public health and general medicine.

Rankings

Also in 2010, the published Financial Times ranking of Masters in Management degree programs in the Maastricht in the category "Value for Money" (roughly: price / performance ) to the University of St. Gallen in 2nd place of 40 landed.

In the business administration area of the CHE rankings of the magazine DIE ZEIT , the School of Business and Economics has regularly been ranked in the top group in recent years, together with the University of St. Gallen , WHU Vallendar , University of Mannheim and the EBS University of Economics and Law .

In the Elsevier rankings 2010, the bachelor programs BSc International Business, BSc Econometrics and Operations Research, BSc Economics, BSc Fiscal Economics and the master’s programs MSc International Business, MSc Management of Learning and MSc Economics took first place in the Netherlands.

campus

The buildings are spread over several districts , so there is no central campus. However, much of the facilities are concentrated in two core areas, the city center and Randwyck. In the city center are the faculties of economics , law and culture and social sciences as well as large parts of the university library and the so-called University College Maastricht , which is based on the model of an American Liberal Arts College . The Faculty of Economics in the Tongersestraat is mostly located in a converted old monastery, but the only remnants from the monastic times are only the typical rectangular courtyard and the former chapel, which is now used as an auditorium. The medical and psychological faculties are located in the Randwyck district . In cooperation with the University of Hasselt in Diepenbeek ( Belgium ), the university forms the so-called Transnational University of Limburg .
