The University of Hasselt (or Universiteit Hasselt or UHasselt ) is a Belgian university based in Hasselt and Diepenbeek . The university is a member of the cross-border university association ALMA .

history

Bike path to the Diepenbeek campus

The university was founded in 1971 under the name Limburgs Universitair Centrum (LUC). In September 1973 operations began on the Diepenbeek campus in the subjects of mathematics , physics , chemistry , biology , dentistry and medicine . The university initially had 322 students and 24 academic faculty.

From 1991 the Economische Hogeschool Limburg was integrated into the university as a faculty for applied economics .

In 2000, through close cooperation with the Dutch University of Maastricht , the Transnational University of Limburg (tUL) was created, a transnational university which, due to the lack of its own campus, is still housed in the rooms of the universities of Hasselt and Maastricht.

In 2002 the University of Hasselt, the Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg and the Xios Hogeschool Limburg founded the Associatie Universiteit Hasselt.

The name of the LUC was changed to its current name on June 15, 2005.

Since 2012 there has been a second campus in the city center of Hasselt (Faculty of Law and Rectorate). As a result of a partial merger with the universities of PHL and XIOS, two new faculties were created at the University of Hasselt in 2013 (engineering and art and architecture), which increased the number of students at the university to 5500.
