The university was founded in 1817 by King Willem I to promote a new intellectual development in the south of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands , later Belgium , where unlike the north there was no university. This policy also led to the establishment of the University of Liège and the University of Leuven . The UGent was officially opened on October 9, 1817, the first rector was JC Van Rotterdam .

After the Belgian Revolution , Ghent University became a French-speaking institute (until then the language of instruction was Latin ), at that time the language of the intellectual elite. Nonetheless, the Flemish Movement made attempts to "Dutchish" it. One of these attempts was made during World War I in 1917, but it was reversed after the war. The Flämisierung Ghent University was in World War I, among others, the Flamenpolitik the German occupiers supported. In 1930 the university finally became Dutch-speaking. The first rector was August Vermeylen (until 1932).

The university has awarded honorary doctorates to Jacques Rogge (2001), Jan Hoet (2000), Kofi Annan (2004), Linda Hutcheon (2005) and Desmond Tutu (2005) , among others .
