Raoul Van Caenegem

Raoul Charles J. Van Caenegem , from 1995: baron Van Caenegem (born July 14, 1927 in Ghent ; † June 15, 2018 ) was a Belgian legal historian and medievalist . He dealt in particular with legal history in the Middle Ages.

Live and act

Van Caenegem studied law at the University of Ghent with a doctorate in 1951 and in history with a doctorate in 1953. François Louis Ganshof was one of his teachers . In addition to Ghent, he studied in Paris (1951/52) at the Sorbonne (Faculty of Law), the École pratique des hautes études and the École nationale des chartes and then in London at the London School of Economics and the Institute of Historical Research. In 1958 he completed his habilitation, carried out research for the Belgian National Science Foundation and became a lecturer in Ghent in 1960. In 1964 he became a professor of medieval history and in 1992 he retired. Since 1967 he has also given the historical lectures in the law faculty. He was visiting professor at numerous foreign universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard (Erasmus Lecturer), at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History in Frankfurt, on whose advisory board he was, in Leiden, The Hague and at the University of Queensland.

In addition to the history of criminal and civil law in Flanders (Belgium), he dealt intensively with the emergence of British common law and its deviations from continental law. He edited various sources, such as the Charter of Philip I , the judgments of the Parlement of Paris and the Common Law Royal Writs in England from the Conquest to Glanvill (Selden Society, London 1959) and English Lawsuits from William I to Richard I. (2 volumes, Selden Society, London 1990/91)

In 1974 he received the Francqui Prize , the Sarton Medal in Ghent in 1994 and the Solvay Prize of the NFWO in 1990 and the Erasmus Medal of the Academia Europaea in 1999 . From 1999 to 2001 he headed the Royal Belgian Historical Commission. He was a member of the Academia Europaea, the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences , the British Academy and the Netherlands Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the American Society of Legal History. He was an honorary doctor in Tübingen, Leuven and Paris.

In 1954 he married the British historian Patricia Carson (* 1929). Van Caenegem died in June 2018 at the age of 90.
