Alfred Schoep

Alfred Ferdinandus Maria Ghislenus Schoep (born June 6, 1881 in Ghent , Belgium, † June 1, 1966 ) was a Belgian geographer and professor of mineralogy , geology and crystallography at Ghent University .

Career

Schoep studied at the University of Ghent and received his doctorate in geography in 1904 and in natural science (mineralogy, geology and crystallography) in 1906. He then received an assistant position in analytical chemistry , which he held from 1906 to 1910.

From 1910 to 1913 he participated as a mineralogist in the geological expedition to southern Katanga under the direction of Dr. Constant Guillemain. The following year he worked in Russia and explored, among other things, the area around the Donets , the Caucasus and the coast of the Caspian Sea .

In 1919 Schoep was appointed junior professor of mineralogy at the scientific faculty of Ghent University and in 1925 also for the field of mineralogy and crystallography at the polytechnic faculty (former mining school) in Mons (Hainaut province).

In 1929 he was appointed full professor of mineralogy, crystallography and applied mineralogy (ore deposits) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Ghent University and in 1932 became director of the School of Technology.

In 1951 Schoep retired as Professor Emeritus .

Private

Alfred Schoep was the son of Euphras Charles Schoep and L. Uytterhaegen and married to Angele Pauline Van Heesvelde. There were no children from the marriage.

Honors

The mineral Schoepit described by Thomas Leonard Walker (1867-1942) in 1923 was named after him. In 1927 he became a member of the "Mineralogical Society of America" ​​and in 1951 a member of the "American Association for the Advancement of Science" (AAAS).
