The UCLouvain Saint-Louis - Bruxelles or officially Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles (German University of Saint-Louis) is a French-speaking university based in the Belgian capital, Brussels .

Since 2004, the faculties have been part of the Académie Louvain , the network of French-speaking Catholic universities in Belgium. In 2007 an integration process into a single Catholic university began.

Around 3500 students study at the three faculties (philosophy, philology and human sciences; law; economics, social affairs and politics) and the Institute for European Studies, the majority of whom achieve a Bachelor's degree here . Since 2007 there have also been Master’s degrees.

history

The aforementioned faculties emerged in 1858 from a Catholic philosophy school on rue du Marais in Brussels, the seat of today's university. A law faculty (fr. Faculté de Droit) quickly joined the faculty of philosophy and philology (fr. Faculté de philosophy, lettres et sciences humaines (FLTR)). In 1891 the faculties were recognized as a free university. In 1965 the Faculty of Economics, Social Affairs and Politics (fr. Faculté des Sciences économiques, Sociales et Politiques (ESPo)) was founded.

In 1969 a Dutch-speaking branch was established, which split off completely in 1973, which is now the Catholic University of Brussels .

In 2004 a fire hit the administrative buildings. The library buildings were destroyed by the fire fighting. The library, built in 2005, includes some striking architectural parts of the old library, for example part of an imposing wooden staircase.
