List of universities in Belgium

In the federal state of Belgium, the legislative power over colleges and universities lies in the hands of the communities . The universities in Belgium are thus recognized by the Flemish , French or German-speaking communities . The communities also determine which diplomas the institutes may award. Most universities are French or Dutch speaking. There are no German-speaking full universities, but since 2005 there has been an autonomous university in the German-speaking community with bachelor's degrees for nurses, primary school teachers and kindergarten teachers.

In Belgium there are universities and colleges responsible for scientific education which provide scientifically sound applied knowledge. There are also other institutes that offer studies that go beyond the Abitur, e.g. B. the art colleges and the college of seafaring.

There are three study cycles at Belgian universities. Before the Bologna Process , the first phase of study ended after two to three years with the candidate's academic degree (fr. Candidat , nl. Kandidaat ), the second cycle, based on the first degree, lasted around two to four years and is a specialist in-depth study the degree as licentiate (fr. licencié , nl. licentiaat ) or engineer (fr. Ingénieur civil , nl. Burgerlijk ingenieur ). In the course of the Bologna Process, these degrees have been called Bachelor and Master since the academic year 2005–2006 and the duration of study has been harmonized to three years for the Bachelor and one or two years for the Master. If you are aiming for a scientific career, you can still do a doctorate. As a rule, the doctoral period before Bologna was four to six years. Since Bologna, a doctorate lasts at least 3 years.

The universities and colleges of the Flemish Community have come together to form cooperation associations (ndl. Associaties ). These include:

• the Associatie KU Leuven , which was founded in 2002 and comprises 13 generally Catholic universities and colleges in Flanders.
• the Associatie van Universiteit en Hogescholen Antwerpen (AUHA), which brings together the four universities of this city.
• the Associatie Universiteit Gent (AUGent), which brings together universities and colleges in the provinces of West and East Flanders.
• the Associatie Universiteit Hasselt , which is limited to universities in the province of Limburg .
• the Universitaire Associatie Brussel , which is made up of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Erasmushogeschool Brussel .

• Académie Wallonie-Europe : ULg (including Faculté universitaire des Sciences agronomiques de Gembloux FUSAGx)
