history
In 936, St. Guibert founded an abbey , which was confirmed by Otto I (HRR) in 946 and placed under his protection. The village of Gembloux was built around this Benedictine monastery, which had a valuable library from the 11th century.
In the 14th century, Gembloux was subject to Brabant .
In 1578 the Battle of Gembloux took place near the city during the Eighty Years' War .
In the Second World War in May 1940 during the western campaign, the area around Gembloux was decisive because the Dyle position here had the “Gembloux gap” ( Trouée de Gembloux ), where the defenders could not use any natural obstacles and therefore over 400 modern tanks put up. In the battle of Hannut on May 12, 1940 they were able to stop the Hoepner Panzer Corps and inflict heavy losses on its mainly light tank units. The next day, the Wehrmacht managed to break through the Gembloux position by focusing on a small section of the front and supporting the air force.
