Gorze is a French commune with 1,167 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).
geography
The municipality of Gorze is located on the border with the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , around 20 kilometers southwest of Metz . In the middle of protected forests, the village is traversed by the Gorzia river, which is fed by numerous local springs and flows six kilometers further into the Moselle . The municipality is located in the Lorraine Regional Nature Park .
history
The place originated around 749 by Chrodegang , Bishop of Metz , founded Benedictine monastery Gorzia ( Abbey Gorze ). Around 930 the monastery was the center of the Gorzer reform . Gorze has been part of France since 1661.
The place was 1915-1918 the Germanized name Gorz and 1940-1944 Gorschen .
From 1912 to 1933 the Electric Railway connected Novéant – Gorze Gorze with the neighboring municipality of Novéant on the Lérouville – Metz railway line , giving the municipality a connection to the Lorraine railway network for a little over 20 years.
