Charly-Oradour (until 1950 Charly ) is a French commune with 679 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Charly-Oradoue is about ten kilometers northeast of Metz .

history

The place was first mentioned as Chairley in the 15th century , but is much older.

1915-1918 and 1940-1944 he carried the German name Karlen .

During the Second World War, a part of the population was by the Germans expelled . 39 of them found refuge in Oradour-sur-Glane , where they were murdered by the Germans in 1944. In August 1950, the place was renamed Charly-Oradour in memory of the dead.
