Ay-sur-Moselle is a French commune with 1,491 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Ay is located on the right bank of the Moselle , about halfway between Metz and Thionville .

history

The place was first mentioned in the Middle Ages as Ayest , but it is much older.

In 1885 the village had 557 inhabitants.

1915-1918 and 1940-1944 he carried the German name Aich on the Mosel .

During the Second World War , the majority of the French inhabitants were expelled by the German civil administration , and on November 16, 1944, the place was retaken by French troops.
