Official geographical code

The official geographical code is a nomenclature of the French municipalities, which is defined by INSEE and which corresponds to the German official municipality key and how this is hierarchically structured. This code consists of five digits, of which the first two indicate the ordinal number of the department and the last three the alphabetical position of the place in this department.

Example:

The city of Metz has the INSEE code 57463. It is made up of 57 (ordinal number of the Moselle department ) and 463 (position of the city in the alphabet of this department).

The French overseas territories are also covered by the INSEE codes, even those that are not divided into municipalities . Three digits for the area and two for the place (example 987 35 Papeete 35th place in 987 French Polynesia) are put together.

INSEE codes are also formed for foreign countries, but not for locations, only for states. They also have five digits and always begin with the sequence of digits 99, followed by a number that designates the continent (1: Europe; 2: Asia, 3: Africa, 4: America, 5: Oceania). Examples for German-speaking countries are 99 109 for Germany, 99 110 for Austria and 99 140 for Switzerland.

Personal identification number NIR

Every person born in France or subject to social security is assigned a 15-digit number as a personal identifier , usually known as the social security number and determined by the registration number of the national register for the identification of natural persons ( Répertoire national d'identification des personnes physiques , RNIPP) is. The directory and the numbers are administered by INSEE, to which the underlying information is transmitted by the registry offices. The official name of this personal identification number, but rarely used outside the INSEE, is Numéro d'inscription au répertoire des personnes physiques , i.e. H. Registration number in the directory of natural persons , abbreviated NIR or NIRPP. The digits 6 to 10 of this number are the INSEE code of the municipality of birth or, if the place of birth is abroad, the country of birth. Furthermore, the gender and year and month of birth of the owner can be read directly from the number.
