His father was a sports psychologist from Croatia. Petrovič achieved his first success in 1983 as a junior world champion in slalom in Sestriere . A little later he became one of the world's best slalom riders. During the 1985/86 season he seemed almost invincible and impressed with an extremely offensive driving style. This season he won five World Cup races, finished second once (in St. Anton ) and once third (in Geilo ). He won the Slalom World Cup with superiority and was the first Yugoslav to win a crystal ball for victory in a discipline World Cup.
After that, however, Petrovič could no longer build on this performance. He only showed his skills once more when he finished second in the Kranjska Gora slalom in 1987 , behind his compatriot Bojan Križaj . In 1988 he ended his career and began studying at the Sports Faculty of the University of Ljubljana . He graduated in 1991 and continued with postgraduate studies. In autumn 1993, shortly before the presentation of his doctoral thesis, he went on vacation to the Croatian island of Korčula . There he drowned while diving .
