Geilo ( Geilo ? / I ) is a winter sports resort in Norway . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Hardangervidda National Park to the west . It is about 800 meters above sea level and about 250 km from the capital Oslo . The place belongs to the municipality of Hol and had 2509 inhabitants in 2019. Audio file / audio sample

climate

At over 800 meters above sea level, Geilo is already in the subarctic climate zone, as only two months have an average temperature of over 10 ° C and the coldest month is below −3 ° C ( effective climate classification : Dfc).

history

After the opening of the Bergen Railway from Oslo to Bergen in 1909, the first holidaymakers came to the town using the new means of transport. During the Second World War , Geilo was home to a German Lebensborn home from 1940 .

Geilo has a train station on the Bergen Railway . Geilo is roughly halfway between Oslo and Bergen.

economy

Blacksmithing has a long tradition in Geilo. Today's industry started with local agriculture and blacksmithing. Today Geilo knives, axes and tools are exported all over the world.

Tourism and sport

In the winter

The place has a 220 km long network of trails and 18 lifts. The total length of the slopes is 25, the longest descent 2 km. The ski area is located at altitudes of 900 to 1175 meters (maximum difference in altitude: 275 meters). It is considered to be absolutely snow reliable in the months of December to April. In 1980 the Winter Paralympics took place in Geilo.

In the first full moon of the year is from Terje Isungset launched Eismusikfestival Geilo instead.

In summer

In summer, Geilo is particularly popular with hikers, anglers and mountain bikers. The Rallarweg along the Hardangervidda was laid out as a construction site road for the Bergen Railway and is now used as a cycle path.

Geilo also offers the opportunity to eat well and in winter also has bars for après-ski. The city offers a culinary highlight with the Hallingstuene restaurant, where the famous Norwegian TV chef Frode Aga cooks.
