history

The University of Ljubljana was founded in 1919 in the center of Ljubljana, what was then Ljubljana. Humanistic and theological academies existed in Ljubljana / Laibach as early as the 17th century and the first university was founded under French rule in 1810, but it only lasted for a short time. Today it employs around 3,500 professors and scientific assistants as well as almost 900 technical and administrative employees. Until the founding of the universities in Maribor ( University of Maribor ) (1978) and in Koper ( University of Primorska ) (2001) it remained the only university in Slovenia for almost 50 years.
