Janez Drnovšek ([ jˈanɛz dərnˈɔuʃɛk ]; born May 17, 1950 in Celje , SR Slovenia , Yugoslavia ; † February 23, 2008 in Zaplana, near Vrhnika ) was a Slovenian politician . Between 1992 and 2002 he was Prime Minister almost continuously and from December 2002 to December 2007 President of the Republic of Slovenia .

biography

Drnovšek completed a degree in economics at the Universities of Ljubljana and Maribor , which he completed with a doctorate. In the 1980s he was the representative of what was then the Republic of Slovenia in the State Council of Yugoslavia and from 1989 to 1990 he was rotating chairman of the SFRY's presidium ; he was thus de facto president. As Chairman of the State Council, he also chaired the meeting of the non-aligned countries in Belgrade in 1990. He was an active member of the Communist Party until the fall of Yugoslavia .

As chairman of the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (Liberalna demokracija Slovenije - LDS) from 1992 to 2002 he succeeded Lojze Peterles as the second prime minister of independent Slovenia; his term of office lasted (with a short break in 2000) from 1992 to 2002. As successor to Milan Kučan , he was sworn in as President of the Republic of Slovenia on December 22, 2002. In June 2006, Drnovšek announced that he did not intend to run for a further term after his term expiring in 2007; on December 22, 2007, he handed over the office of President to Danilo Türk .

Janez Drnovšek was divorced and had two grown children - a son from his marriage and an illegitimate daughter. He was a vegan in his final years and had increasingly turned to Buddhist ideas. Since 1999 he was known to have kidney cancer . He died as a result of this illness in February 2008.

Drnovšek was the founder of the "Movement for Justice and Development".
