Life

Miro Cerar is the son of the Slovenian Attorney General and former Justice Minister Zdenka Cerar and the gymnast Miroslav Cerar . Cerar has been one of the most influential Slovenian lawyers for several years and has already worked on the constitution of the Republic of Slovenia. He is a professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Ljubljana .

Political career

After Alenka Bratušek resigned as Prime Minister in May 2014, Cerar announced that it would go into politics. On June 2, 2014 he founded the Stranka Mira Cerarja party (SMC - "Miro Cerars Party"), with which he won the Slovenian parliamentary election on July 13, 2014 in a landslide victory. On August 25, 2014, the State Assembly , the Parliament of Slovenia, elected Cerar as the new Prime Minister by 51 votes to 11 and charged him with forming a government. His government was sworn in on September 18, 2014 . In addition to Cerars 'party, the Democratic Pensioners' Party of Slovenia and the Socialni Demokratiei are also involved.

On March 14, 2018, Cerar announced his resignation for the following day. The reason was a recently issued decision by the country's highest court in which a referendum on the construction of the new Prešnica – Koper railway was declared invalid. President Pahor accepted the resignation, but refrained from appointing another politician to form a government. Instead, he spoke out in favor of bringing forward the parliamentary elections scheduled for July 2018 . After the unsuccessful elections for the SMC with 9.8% of the vote , Marjan Šarec was elected as his successor as prime minister on August 17, 2018. The SMC remained as a junior partner in his government and Cerar took over the office of foreign minister.

After the SMC failed to achieve a mandate in the 2019 European elections with only 1.6% of the vote, Cerar made his position as party leader of the SMC available. Zdravko Počivalšek was elected as his successor . After the government of Marjan Šarec resigned on January 29, 2020, Cerar spoke out against his party's entry into the newly formed cabinet of Janez Janša , so that he no longer belongs to the new government. Cerar also resigned from the SMC on March 2, 2020 in protest against this government formation.
