Lojze Peterle (actually: Alojz Peterle ; born July 5, 1948 in Čužnja vas near Trebnje ) is a Slovenian politician and diplomat . He was party leader of the Christian Party of Slovenia from its inception in the late 1980s until it merged with other parties to form the Christian Democratic Party Nova Slovenija in 2000 . He contributed to Slovenia becoming independent from the SFR Yugoslavia .

Peterle became Prime Minister of Slovenia in May 1990 after the parliamentary elections . In 1991 he proclaimed the country's independence from Yugoslavia, followed by the 10-day war in which the territorial Slovenian armed forces were able to defeat the Yugoslav army . Peterle was Prime Minister until 1992 when a coalition government under Janez Drnovšek came to power. From January 1993 to October 1994 Peterle was Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister . There was tension in the coalition, and Peterle resigned in 1994 after Drnovšek nominated Jožef Školč , a member of his own Liberal Democratic Party, to be speaker of parliament, even though Peterle wanted a Christian Democrat to be the speaker. The Christian Democrats stayed in the coalition, but they were often at odds. In 1996 Peterle called for Foreign Minister Zoran Thaler to be dismissed because he believed that Thaler was not promoting Slovenia's relations with Italy enough.

When the government fell in 2000, Peterle was again foreign minister in the short-lived government of Andrej Bajuk from June to September 2000, when Drnovšek came back to power. Peterle's diplomatic policy always sought to improve Slovenia's relations with other countries in order to secure Slovenia's reputation in the international community.

In 2002 he got cancer. In the European elections in 2004 , 2009 and 2014 of the European Parliament , Peterle was elected for the New Slovenia party. In the European Parliament he is a. a. in the cross-political group “MEPs Against Cancer”.

In 2007 Peterle strove for the post of President of Slovenia . In the first round of the presidential election on October 21, he received the most votes, but was defeated by Danilo Türk in the runoff on November 11, 2007 .
