The Slovenian Prime Minister ( Slovenian Predsednik Vlade Republike Slovenije ; literally: President of the Government ) heads the government of the Republic of Slovenia . Since the first free elections in 1990 and Slovenia's independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, there have been nine heads of government (see list). The Prime Minister is appointed by the State Assembly (Državni zbor) on the proposal of the President and must enjoy its continued trust.

1) Lojze Peterle was elected Prime Minister of the Yugoslav republic of Slovenia in 1990. After the declaration of independence, he remained in office until the first elections of the new Republic of Slovenia.
