Borut Pahor (born November 2, 1963 in Postojna , Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian politician and incumbent Slovenian President . Between November 2008 and January 2012 he held the office of Prime Minister .

Life

In 1987 Pahor graduated in political science with a focus on international relations. From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia, from 1992 a member of the State Assembly , from 2000 to 2004 its President. In the same year he was elected to the European Parliament as a candidate for the Socialni Demokrati , he belonged to the group of the Party of European Socialists .

From 1997 he was chairman of the political party United List of Social Democrats ( Slovenian Združena lista socialnih Demokratieov or ZLSD ) in Slovenia, in 2005 he became chairman of the party Socialni Demokratie (SD), which emerged from the ZLSD .

On September 21, 2008, his party won the parliamentary elections in Slovenia with him as the top candidate . He was elected Prime Minister by the National Assembly on November 7, 2008. He resigned his mandate in the European Parliament on October 14, 2008; Aurelio Juri moved in as a successor .

Almost exactly three years to the day after the elections, on September 20, 2011, the State Assembly , the first chamber of the Slovenian Parliament, the government and Prime Minister Pahor expressed their distrust . The vote was preceded by several resignations by cabinet members. A corruption affair involving the former Interior Minister Katarina Kresal in particular caused outrage . According to a survey by the daily Dnevnik , 84 percent of the population were recently dissatisfied with the work of the government.

Since the State Assembly had not elected a successor to Pahor, early parliamentary elections were called for December 4, 2011 . Pahors SD lost almost two thirds of their parliamentary seats in the elections and only became the third strongest force in the new parliament. Janez Janša was sworn in as the new Slovenian Prime Minister on January 28, 2012 .

On December 2, 2012, Pahor prevailed in the second round of the presidential election in Slovenia with 67.4 percent of the vote against the incumbent Danilo Türk . The inauguration of Pahor took place on December 23, 2012. On December 23, 2017 Pahor was confirmed in office.

Activities as a member of the European Parliament

As a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Pahor was Vice-Chair of the Delegation in the EU-Croatia Joint Parliamentary Committee and a member of the Committee on Budgetary Control , in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs . He was an alternate member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Temporary Committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners .
