Zoran Milanović (born October 30, 1966 in Zagreb , SR Croatia , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian politician. He has been the 5th President of the Republic of Croatia since February 18, 2020 . He was previously Prime Minister of Croatia from December 2011 to January 2016.

Life

After studying law at the University of Zagreb , Milanović became an employee of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In 1998 he completed postgraduate studies in European law in Brussels .

From 2007 to 2016 he was chairman of Socijaldemokratska Partija Hrvatske (SDP). In the parliamentary elections in Croatia in 2007 he was elected MP. He was group leader of the SDP in the Croatian Parliament .

In the parliamentary elections on December 4, 2011 , he was the top candidate of his party, which ran as part of the electoral alliance Kukuriku . After winning a majority of the seats, Milanović was elected Prime Minister of Croatia on December 23, 2011 by parliament to succeed Jadranka Kosor .

On December 22, 2019, he won the first round of the 2019/20 presidential elections against incumbent Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović , followed by the runoff election on January 5, 2020, which he also won and was thus elected President of Croatia. He took office on February 18, 2020.
