Gitanas Nausėda (born May 19, 1964 in Klaipėda ) is a Lithuanian economist, politician and former professor at Vilnius University (VU). He has been president of the country since July 12, 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Gitanas Nausėda failed the university entrance exam to study mathematics . He worked in a pharmaceutical warehouse for a year. After work he attended mathematical preparation courses. He then completed his diploma studies with distinction from 1982 to 1987 at the Faculty of Industrial Economics and from 1987 to 1989 at the Faculty of Economics of Vilnius University . He received a scholarship from the DELTA Foundation of the German entrepreneur Dr. Fridolin Scheuerle; the DAAD supported him as a doctoral student at the University of Mannheim from 1990 to 1992. There he prepared his doctoral thesis and received his doctorate in 1993 in Vilnius . From 1992 to 1993 he was a research assistant at the Research Institute for Business and Privatization . In 1994 he continued his education at the Bundestag in Berlin and Bonn and in 1998 at the World Bank in Washington, DC

From 1993 to 1994 Nausėda worked as an official at the Competition Authority ( Valstybinė kainų ir konkurencijos tarnyba ). He headed the financial market department . From 1994 to 1996 Nausėda was deputy head of a sub-department, from 1996 to 2000 director of the monetary policy department, from 1998 to 2000 a member of the board of directors of the central bank Lietuvos bankas . From 2000 to 2008 he was an advisor to the CEO of AB Vilniaus bankas . Since 2008 he has been an advisor to the President of SEB bankas . Nausėda is also a financial analyst . From 1993 to 1996 he published various articles on economic issues in the daily newspaper " Lietuvos rytas ". From 1987 to 2004 Nausėda taught as a lecturer and then as a lecturer at the Department of Finance at Vilnius University . Since 2010 he has been teaching as a professor at the University of Business Administration in Vilnius.

In the 2019 presidential election in Lithuania , he prevailed in the second ballot with 66.62% of the vote against Ingrida Šimonytė, a member of the Seimas, who was supported by the conservative party . He is considered to be NATO and EU friendly. Nausėda has announced that it will strengthen cohesion among Lithuanians and the welfare state.

In addition to his native Lithuanian , Gitanas Nausėda also speaks German, English and Russian.

family

Nausėda's father worked in a cellulose factory as the chief energy economist. His mother is a maths and physics teacher, his sister also graduated five years before him, also studying at the Faculty of Economics at Vilnius University. She lives and works in Vilnius, in auditing .

Nausėda is married. His wife Diana Nausėdienė teaches at the college. The daughters Gedailė Nausėdaitė and Ugnė Nausėdaitė study abroad. The family lives in Pūčkoriai , in the Pavilniai Regional Park .
