Ingrida Šimonytė (born November 15, 1974 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian economist and conservative, non-party politician , former finance minister of the country and Prime Minister of Lithuania since November 25, 2020 .

In the 2019 presidential election in Lithuania , she achieved a relative majority of votes in the 1st ballot (31.35%) ahead of the bank economist Gitanas Nausėda (31.16%), but was ultimately not elected president in the 2nd ballot.

Life

After graduating from the 7th Vilnius Middle School in Žirmūnai in 1992 , Ingrida Šimonytė completed a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1996 and a master's degree in finance at the Faculty of Economics at Vilnius University (VU) in 1998 .

Careers in politics and public service

From 1997, Ingrida Šimonytė worked in the Fiscal Policy Department of the Ministry of Finance of Lithuania , and from 2002 she was the director of the Tax Department . She then worked as ministerial secretary and from July 1, 2009 to July 6, 2009 as deputy finance minister. From July 7, 2009 to 2012, Šimonytė was the Lithuanian Minister of Finance in the Kubilius II cabinet (appointed by President Valdas Adamkus ). Her predecessor, Algirdas Šemeta, succeeded Dalia Grybauskaitė , who was elected President of Lithuania on May 17, 2009, as a member of the European Commission .

From 2013 to 2016, Šimonytė taught economics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Vilniaus Universitetas . From July 2013 to November 2016, she was Deputy Chairwoman of the Central Bank of Lithuania ( Lietuvos bankas ), appointed by President Dalia Grybauskaitė .

In the parliamentary elections on October 9, 2016, Šimonytė was elected to the Lithuanian Parliament Seimas for the TS-LKD . In the constituency of Antakalnis , she prevailed as a direct candidate against the then Social Democratic Minister of Health Juras Požela .

In the parliamentary election on October 11, 2020, Šimonytė was the list leader of the TS-LKD and was elected for the TS-LKD in the Lithuanian parliament Seimas in the first ballot. In the Antakalnis constituency , she won 62.65% of the votes against such politicians as NS list leader Vytautas Radžvilas (second-best result in the constituency: 6.44%), Svetlana Kauzonienė (1.42%) and others.

2019 presidential election

In September 2018, Šimonytė announced that it would participate in the 2019 Lithuanian presidential election . In the candidate election in the conservative TS-LKD party , she prevailed with 78.71% of votes against EU diplomats and lawyers Vygaudas Ušackas (* 1964). This made Šimonytė the official candidate of the Home Union ( Tėvynės Sąjunga ).
