Vygaudas Ušackas
Vygaudas Ušackas (born December 16, 1964 in Skuodas ) is a Lithuanian diplomat, politician and former Lithuanian foreign minister .
Life
In 1982 Vygaudas Ušackas graduated from Skuodas Second Secondary School and in 1990 studied law at Vilnius University . 1989–1990 he was a student functionary, vice-president of the Student Coordination Council of Lithuania. Ušackas studied political science and international economics at the University of Oslo ( Norway ) from 1990 and politics at the University of Aarhus ( Denmark ) from 1991.
Vygaudas Ušackas was Deputy Foreign Minister of Lithuania (1999–2000), Ambassador to the United States and the United Kingdom (2006–2008). From December 2008 to January 2010 he was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania. He resigned from this position on January 21, 2010 and was officially dismissed on January 26 by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius . This was preceded by criticism from the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė , who publicly withdrew her confidence in Ušackas and recommended his removal. The reasons for this were repeated differences of opinion between the President and the Foreign Minister, among other things over the interpretation of the report of the Committee of Inquiry into secret CIA prisons in Lithuania or the country’s policy towards neighboring Belarus . Ušackas' successor in the post of Foreign Minister was Audronius Ažubalis in February 2010 . In the meantime, Rasa Juknevičienė was acting as head of the ministry.
On February 22, 2010, Vygaudas Ušackas was appointed by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton as the new EU Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the EU Mission in Kabul . From September 2013 to October 2017 he worked as the EU ambassador to Russia .
In the summer of 2018, he announced his participation in the 2019 Lithuanian presidential election . In the candidate election in the conservative TS-LKD party , the non-party Ingrida Šimonytė prevailed against Ušackas with 78.71% of the votes. This made Šimonytė the official candidate of Tėvynės Sąjunga . Ušackas refrained from participating in the presidential election as an independent candidate and promised his support to Šimonytė.
He is a member of the Tėvynės sąjunga .
